All Rise...Judge Brett Cullum goes to sex ed in Toronto! The ChargeCan a guy who does the books figure out how to do the nasty? The CaseAfter an uptight accountant (Jonas Chernick ,Lucid) loses his girlfriend because he lacks any kind of sexual prowess, he enlists the help of a happy stripper (Emily Hampshire, Snow Cake), who agrees to teach him how to please a woman in exchange for his money knowledge to transform her flailing finances. An Awkward Sexual Adventure, a Canadian indie comedy, is straightforward, knowing what beats to hit and when. It borders on sexual farce, with our poor hero being subjected to a kinky array of massage parlors, cross dressing, and S&M. His sexual teacher is ambitious, and one wonders if the girl he is trying to win back is simply going to run in horror when she realizes how far her accountant will go to please her. Emily Hampshire is the standout here as the exotic dancer with a heart of gold; we root for her to get the guy anyway. This is a simple little sitcom plot that is married with enough naughty bits to make your NC-17-loving friends blush. You get dirty talk, full frontal nudity, and two sweet leads who seem to deserve a happy ending. The DVD does a nice job with the film which was shot on a dime on location in Toronto, Canada. Flesh tones look natural, which is super important with nudity. Black levels and aliasing are no problem, and it all looks just fine and dandy. Surround sound is overkill, and we find most of the action to the left and right since it is mainly dialogue-driven. The only extra offered is a quick look behind the scenes with the cast and crew. It's enough since the film doesn't need much explanation. This is a fine package that represents the movie well. There is a fun romantic comedy here underneath all the gross-out near-porn. Although Emily Hampshire is the best thing here, Jonas Chernick puts his television chops to good use. It's odd, but usually the clothed scenes work best since that's where all the character stuff happens. It's got a sweet nature about it, so An Awkward Sexual Adventure is as charming as it is naughty. The true triumph here is that two people change each other's lives for the better, using their best talents, no matter how dubious or boring. The VerdictA romantic comedy that will change the way you see cantaloupe. Not guilty.
