Terry Fator: Live in Concert (DVD)

A one-of-a-kind experience.

Back when America’s Got Talent was still pretending they were looking for an entertainer as opposed to simply seeking out a singer, a man won the reality show by utilizing three different skillsets: singing, comedy, and ventriloquism. That man was Terry Fator. And winning the show in 2007 meant he earned the right to headline a show in Las Vegas, which quickly became one of the hottest tickets on the Strip. He has retained a spot on the among the headliners for close to a decade, and Terry Fator: Live in Concert will more than adequately satisfy your curiosity about Fator’s act — it will make you want to hop a ticket to Sin City to see it in person.

Terry Fator: Live in Concert is a recording of his Vegas show taped at the Mirage and entitled “All Hits No Lips.” Calling it a concert is indeed the appropriate visual. The entirety of the show is Terry on stage with a band behind him. There’s a small platform next to him upon which his puppets sit. There are songs, jokes, and a bit of audience participation. Terry Fator’s performance moves at a quick clip with the only lulls coming when time is taken to introduce the band or to switch puppets. But even these feel more like a moment to breathe as opposed to a halt to the momentum.

The highlighted performers in Terry’s act are Emma Taylor, the little girl with the big voice, and Winston the impressionist. Both are puppets, with Winston serving as the act’s only non-human puppet. My favorite parts of the show are when Terry laughs at his own jokes, very nearly breaking character. It happens more than once and the aplomb with which he handles it amuses me.

Fator’s vocal abilities are truly impressive and his show is a well put-together collection of different genres and tastes. There is a genuine effort to cater to just about any musical type out there. Over two dozen songs are showcased during the runtime, which clocks in at just over an hour-and-a-half. Performances include takes on artists such as: Dolly Parton, Dean Martin, Aaron Neville, Elvis, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Stevie Wonder, Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole.

Lots of comedy, songs, and puppets combine to create a show you will enjoy watching over and over. Terry Fator: Live in Concert provides the next best thing to being there in person.

The video transfer is shot and put together like a typical live concert intended for the at home audience. The 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen contains plenty of shots of Terry and company from the waist up, plenty more close ups, and just a few too many audience reaction shots to prove to us real live people are watching! You know what? After the opening I’ll take your word for it. I don’t spend my time at an actual concert looking at the crowd around me, why on earth would I want to do it at home? But I digress. The audio is a Dolby 5.1 track which won’t blow your system away but it is more than serviceable. I would have liked to hear more layers in the mix, the bass and lower end tend to creep up on the track, nearly overwhelming it at times.

Special features include an audio commentary track, a digital copy along with some featurettes. The featurettes are amusing, especially the ones concerning Walter, the puppet who is currently running for President.

Terry Fator: Live in Concert will more than satisfy your urge for an entertaining show. With music, ventriloquism and comedy there’s something to appeal to just about everyone.

THE VERDICT

Not guilty.
