Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: NYC Showdown

Turtle power.

Time for another dose of reptilian chop-socky, chosen from Nickelodeon’s 2003 series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  Like The Search for Splinter, NYC Showdown offers another three episodes. Will that be enough to satiate your pizza cravings?

“Return to New York Part 1”

The turtles are back in the Big Apple and they’ve got a whole host of foot soliders and roid-raging mid-tier bad guys waiting for them. Thankfully, the foot remain as inept as ever and are promptly beaten to within an inch of their lives.

“The Search for Splinter Part 2”

Despite the Foot’s affinity for getting smacked around, the turtles are stuck in the bad guys’ HQ where they must square off with a detachment of mutant Shredder clones. Later, Splinter appears to wave around a lightsaber.

“The Search for Splinter Part 3”

In the rip-roaring finale, the turtle brothers make their final push against a super-powered Shredder with help from Casey Jones and some guy in a robot suit. The last battle has to happen sans Splinter, who gets tossed off a building. Shockingly, the subtraction of a geriatric rat from the battleground doesn’t do much to affect our heroes’ odds.

I suppose there will always be a thirst for hot Ninja Turtle action and Nickelodeon throws some crumbs the way of the famished with this recycling of decade-plus episodes from a middling TV series. At least this batch have a coherent narrative playing out across all three shows, and old-fashioned TMNT bad guys get screen time. That’s more than you can say for similar releases.

The DVD: full frame, 2.0 stereo, no extras.
