“Hey! It’s Fluffy!”
Gabriel Iglesias (Magic Mike) is rapidly becoming an icon in the comedy world. Following his successful Comedy Central stand-up specials, the network greenlit an episodic show and Gabriel Iglesias Presents Stand-Up Revolution was born. Evoking the style of shows like Late Night with Conan O’Brien and The Tonight Show or pretty much any variety show you can name, Iglesias begins each episode with a brief monologue, often engaging in banter with his friend/announcer Martin Moreno (Stuck) before introducing one of usually two comics. Each of those comics then performs their bit. Aside from the season finale which featured the debut of “Fluffy Classics” (animated bits of Iglesias’ early material) you can pretty much count on that formula.
To the show’s credit, Stand-Up Revolution: Season 2 did a very good job casting its talent. It provides a roster of comics whose brands of humor and manners of delivery are as varied as they come, so no matter what tickles your funny bone you’re sure to find a comic here who delivers. There’re the racial stereotype gags, the foreigner in a strange land bits, and the taboo topics as fodder, to name but a few.
The comics featured this season are: Trevor Noah, Dov Davidoff, Nick Guerra, Gina Yashere, Dillon Garcia, Wil Sylvince, Dustin Ybarra, Thai Rivera, Alfred Robles, Tony Baker, Ian Bagg, and Pablo Francisco.
The talent is hit or miss, which is to be expected for a show with such a broad range. Iglesias himself is the most consistent, which is also to be expected, but the compilation is fun to watch and the episodes are well-paced, never dragging on past the point where the laughs die.
Presented in standard def 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby 2.0 Stereo, the video and audio are on par with a currently broadcast show. But a stand-up special just needs to be audible, not super pumped, so it works. Bonus features include additional footage on stage and behind the scenes, as well as outtakes.
If your comedic tastes run the gamut then Stand-Up Revolution: Season 2 is a good choice to add to your collection.
