Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition: The Workout (DVD)

Chris Powell is the latest in a long line of celebrity trainers to branch out from the television show that they host to market products targeted to the at-home audience who watch them every week.

In this case Powell comes courtesy of the ABC show Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition and this DVD is definitely cross marketed with the show. Among his background workout partners are none other than three of his recently televised clients, each of whom lost over 160 pounds in one year.

The best thing about Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition: The Workout is the time between exercises during which Powell explains what is about to be done and provides a demonstration before the rotation begins. Also helpful is the circuit nature of the workouts during which three exercises are combined, then the whole rotation begins again, thus it’s easy to follow.

There are no special pieces of equipment needed, although you definitely want a mat if you’re working out on a hard surface because there’s some floor work included. There are three workout levels…level one is fifteen minutes, level two is thirty minutes and level three is thirty-five minutes. Each level includes its own warm up as well as cool down.

The beginning level is perfect for a newbie to the workout or working out in general. Each level builds on the exercises performed in the level before it, which helps when following along because you know that you will just be modifying something you’ve become accustomed to doing.

Overall, I found something challenging to perform in each level but I had no difficulty following Powell’s instructions when learning the exercises, which is great because if there’s one thing I hate it’s having to fumble for the remote during my workout so I can rewind and re-watch something I’m just not getting. Powell is encouraging without being too hyper.

One thing I would have liked to see is an explanation of when to move from one level to another. As it stands, it’s pretty much whenever you feel like you can, but I would have liked to have some sign of when it might be appropriate. Also people looking for dietary advice are going to be disappointed as this disc focuses solely on the exercises.

The video is crisp and clear and thankfully the cuts away from Powell to the other participants work and never catch anyone faltering. This is all indoor studio work and the picture is clean and never too soft. The audio is okay with a few exceptions when Powell talks directly into his mike due to his positioning but it never distorts to the point where I can’t understand him.

Special features include a music-only track, as well as a sit down with the three participants from both this video and Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition wherein they provide information and inspiration to viewers.
